Sarah & Matt — a destination wedding in São Miguel, Azores

Sarah and Matt’s Azores wedding took place in September on São Miguel Island, with guests arriving from the US, a groom with Azorean roots, and a couple who brought an incredible amount of warmth and energy to every part of their day.

Sarah and Matt travelled from Nashville, Tennessee, to São Miguel to celebrate their wedding in a place that already had a special connection to Matt and his family. For us, it was also a chance to tell a story in one of the most beautiful destination wedding locations in Portugal.

From our very first FaceTime call, we knew there was something special about these two. When we finally met in person, it didn’t feel like meeting a wedding couple for the first time. It felt more like catching up with old friends.

And that feeling stayed with us throughout the entire day.

An Azores wedding morning in Ponta Delgada

The story of this wedding film really started during the morning preparations.

There was music, laughter, friends moving around the room and the girls singing “Chapel of Love” while getting ready. Outside the window was one of the beautiful streets of Ponta Delgada, and inside there was the kind of relaxed atmosphere that made everything feel effortless.

Sarah and Matt weren’t interested in putting on a performance for the camera. They were simply enjoying the day — and that’s exactly what we wanted the film to feel like.

Light, cinematic, emotional and just a little bit playful.

A wedding connected to the Azores

For Matt, getting married on São Miguel wasn’t just about finding a beautiful destination.

His Azorean roots made the island a meaningful part of the story, which made the choice of location feel even more personal. Surrounded by family and friends who had travelled all the way from the United States, the wedding became a meeting point between different places, families and memories.

And that’s one of the things we love about destination weddings. They aren’t only about the location. The place becomes part of the story.

And of course, if you’re filming a wedding in the Azores, you can’t really ignore the landscape.

São Miguel has everything we love visually — volcanic landscapes, dramatic coastlines, lush green hills, the Atlantic Ocean and the colourful streets of Ponta Delgada.

So yes, drone footage had to be part of this wedding film.

We used aerial shots not simply because the views are spectacular, but because they help show where this story happened. The landscape becomes another character in the film, connecting the intimate moments of the wedding with the island surrounding them.

Destination wedding in the Azores

One of our favourite things about this Azores wedding is that most of the guests actually had a shorter journey from the United States to the Azores than we did travelling from Poland.

And somehow that feels very appropriate.

Sarah and Matt brought everyone together in the middle of the Atlantic, on an island connected to their story, for a day that felt incredibly personal and completely their own.

For us, this was exactly what a destination wedding film should be — not just a beautiful collection of shots, but a small cinematic story about two people, the people they love, and a place that means something to them.
